The name we are given by our parents has a big impact on us. Throughout our life, from the playground to the office, other people will make instinctive and subconscious assumptions about who we are just from our name. We'll hear it spoken in anger and joy, it'll be shortened, lengthened and parodied, it will be loved and loathed. Finding a name that you like, that suits your child and that your child will be happy to carry with them for the rest of their life is not easy. The possibilities seem endless. So where do you start? Brilliant Baby Names has all the answers and will help you to take the worry out of getting your baby's name just right.
More than just an alphabetical list of popular names, Brilliant Baby Names is the ultimate guide to naming your baby. As you'd expect, the book is packed with 1000s of names to review. Each is listed with details on what they mean and their origin.
The lists are split into boys', girls' and neutral names to make the selection process as simple as possible. If you need more help or are looking for a namesake, you'll find extra inspiration in the lists of the 100 greatest names from cinema, literature, entertainment, sport and many more. As well as the name lists though, you'll find everything you need to keep in mind, and avoid, when considering a name for your child.

There's essential help and advice in handling and resolving any disagreements with your partner and managing family expectations. Considerable attention in our own time is devoted to the cult of celebrity: to celebrating people who attain great fame and the cultural events and paraphernalia that surround them. While even sophisticated observers are tempted to regard celebrity as a phenomenon distinctly related to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, it is by no means a recent invention. The nineteenth, eighteenth, and even seventeenth century also expended enormous energies in scrutinising and analysing the "celebrated" persons or events of their times. Indeed, the publicity apparatus that we associate with celebrity today can be seen as a natural outgrowth of the first experiments with mass media in the "early modern" and "modern" eras. This volume explores the genesis of and the variations on "celebrity" during the long eighteenth century, both in English-speaking cultures and in the broader western sphere of cultural influence.
This book provides a complete conspectus of the evidence for every identifiable resident of Athens in antiquity, except for foreigners whose ethnic is known. It is thus both a prosopography and an onomasticon in one. In the former capacity, it is the successor to the distinguished Prosopographia Attica of J. Kirchner, published in 1903; in the latter it provides the Athenian contribution to the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names series, edited by P. M. Fraser and E. Matthews. The evidence for the denizens of Athens in antiquity is substantially epigraphical in nature and most of the references in this work are to inscriptions. This is particularly so for the Hellenistic and Roman periods, when the literary sources all but fail. Since Kirchner completed his magisterial work, excavations, especially in the Athenian Agora, have brought to light a massive treasure trove of inscriptions. This volume incorporates the evidence from these new discoveries, brings up to date the (now) antiquated forms of references which render Kirchner's work so hard to use, and also includes the evidence from the Roman period. This volume will serve as an invaluable tool for scholars of ancient history and epigraphy, bringing together for the first time in ninety years the evidence for every individual of Ancient Athens who is known by name from the early Classical to the late Roman period.
